Grade 4–7—When their beloved Aunt Grace dies, Dan, 11, and Amy, 14—along with other Cahill descendants—are faced with an unusual choice: inherit one million dollars or participate in a perilous treasure hunt. Cahills have determined the course of history for centuries, and this quest’s outcome will bring the victors untoward power and affect all of humankind. Against the wishes of nasty Aunt Beatrice, their reluctant guardian since their parents’ deaths, Dan and Amy accept the challenge, convincing their college-age au pair to serve as designated adult. Pitted against other Cahill teams, who will stop at nothing to win, the siblings decipher the first of 39 clues and are soon hot on the historical trail of family member Ben Franklin to unearth the next secret. Adeptly incorporating a genuine kids’ perspective, the narrative unfolds like a boulder rolling downhill and keeps readers glued to the pages. As the siblings work together to solve puzzles and survive dangers, they develop into well-drawn individuals with their own strengths and personalities. Supporting Cahill cast members come across as intentionally exaggerated caricatures, adding to the tale’s breathless fun. The book dazzles with suspense, plot twists, and snappy humor, but the real treasure may very well be the historical tidbits buried in the story. Part of a multimedia launch including a Web site, collectible game cards, and a 10-title series (penned by different authors), this novel stands solidly on its own feet and will satisfy while whetting appetites for more. .—Joy Fleishhacker, School Library Journal

I am not done yet but will be. This book is a good book for people over 12 that are into mysterys books.

The wright three / Brennan

Filed under: Uncategorized —— Brennan @ 8:18 pm

Calder’s friend Tommy, who moved away a year before, has moved back to Hyde Park, Chicago. He is immediately jealous of Calder and Petra as they received the glory of saving aVermeer painting in the previous book (Chasing Vermeer). Tommy feels that he deserves something, as he is the expert finder. In his first new day of class, Ms. Hussey announces that the world-famous Robie House is soon to be demolished, which she considers to be murder. The class takes a field trip to the house, and discovers that there are many secrets concerning the building that they were not aware of. After Tommy learns to tolerate, and (later) actually like Petra, the three (who call themselves the Wright 3) work to save the house, even breaking into it toward the end. Tommy finds a fish talisman in the Robie House garden and realizes it was worth a lot of money. Finally, after saving their own lives, they manage to save that of the house. In every illustration, there is a drawing of a fish (referring toFrank Lloyd Wright’s luck talisman) that is usually hidden by nature. On one of the last illustration a dragon can be found, expressing the legendary Chinese story of a trout that becomes a dragon.

imagesPetra Andalee and Calder Pillay are both in Ms. Hussey’s sixth grade class. When they strike up an unlikely friendship they discover they have a lot more in common than their age and their deep appreciation for their sixth grade teacher. For starters they both love art, museums and blue M & M’s. When a thief steals a Vermeer painting heading to Chicago, Petra and Calder team up to solve the mystery and recover the painting. As the thief leaves clues in the local newspaper, Petra and Calder use all their resources before the painting is destroyed as the thief has indicated. With the help of a set of a mysterious book about unexplained phenomena, Calder and Petra race against the clock to chase down the painting and catch a thief.

How and why I am into Gary Paulsen/ Preston

top_left When I was young I DID NOT like reading.

So I just sat in front of a random book during reading time. But that all changed when I got into seventh grade. My LA teacher

was Mr. Lamb. One day at the beginning of the year, Mr. Lamb recommended me a book.

The book was about 60 pages and it was by Gary Paulsen. The tittle of the book was The Seventh Crystal.

The seventh crystal  Mr. Lamb told me to try reading the first chapter and see if I get into it.

Surprisingly I loved it! I remember getting hooked after the first few pages.

I could go on and on but I will put it this way.

I finished the book in a week and loved it!

So I found another short book by Gary Paulsen.

And that is what started my reading.

Lawn Boy/ Preston

One day I was 12 years old and broke. Then Grandma gave me Grandpa’s old riding lawnmower. I set out to mow some lawns. More
people wanted me to mow their lawns. And more and more. . . . One client was Arnold the stockbroker, who offered to teach me about “the beauty of capitalism. Supply and Demand. Diversify labor. Distribute the wealth.” “Wealth?” I said. “It’s groovy, man,” said Arnold.

If I’d known what was coming, I might have climbed on my mower and putted all the way home to hide in my room. But the lawn business grew and grew. So did my profits, which Arnold invested in many things. And one of them was Joey Pow the prizefighter. That’s when my 12th summer got really interesting.9780385746861

Harry Potter: the goblet of fire / Brennan

Filed under: Uncategorized —— Brennan @ 8:00 pm

another great book that is better than the movie. This story opens in the  home of Tom Riddle, the father of evil Lord Voldemort, and the one whom Voldemort murdered in cold blood. In the study of this old house, in front of a roaring fireplace, a servant of Lord Voldemort waits on his master, who is not, in his state able to function in this world of reality because he has lost his regular  body ,so he can function only in a weak, helpless, disgusting undead body, a disembodied spirit, really. How did Voldemort lose his l body, you might ask? In book one ,the sorcerer’s stone, Voldemort used the strongest Black Magic killing curse to murder Harry’s father and mother, and to attempt to kill baby Harry. However, just as she was dying, Harry’s mother was able to cast a very ancient, protective spell over Harry, saving Harry’s life. Suddenly, the killing curse that had just killed Harry’s parents did not kill him, causing the curse to rebound upon Voldemort. Had Voldemort not specifically cast a spell beforehand that gave him eternal life, he would have been killed outright. However, he was weakened to such a degree that he lost his body, existing only as a disembodied spirit. As the scene opens, Lord Voldemort is speaking to Wormtail, the one servant who had returned to assist his master. These two wizards are discussing how they are going to use an upcoming special opportunity to get Harry Potter so they can kill him. This special opportunity was later identified as the Triwizard Championship Tournament, a special tournament in which a champion from each of the other two schools can compete in a specially devised battle of witches and wizards.

Harry Potter: the order of the pheonix / brennan

Filed under: Uncategorized —— Brennan @ 7:47 pm

This book is also better than the movie. the “Order of the Phoenix” is the name given to the group of wizards who fight the rise of the Dark Lord, Voldemort, who (thanks to the Ministry of Magic and the newspaper, The Daily Prophet) most people in the magical community are convinced is still in the death-like condition he was forced into 15 years ago. He lost most of his powers and his physical form when an attack on Harry Potter went wrong. However the 4th book of the series (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire), Harry saw with his own eyes that Voldemort was back. Corneleus Fudge, head of the Ministry of Magic, refused to believe it and has since been discrediting both Harry and the Headmaster of Hogwarts, Albus Dumbledore. Dumbledore is known as probably the most powerful wizard of his generation and “the only one Voldemort was ever afraid of”, and has been Harry’s great ally for the first 4 years of his attending Hogwarts school. However, the Ministry now views Dumbleore as their main threat, while Dumbledore himself refuses to as much as look at Harry these days, leaving him feeling extremely angry. When he finds out about the Order of the Phoenix but is still denied more information, that anger grows, and in several places in the book appears to overwhelm him and distance his friends from him. Not only that but the Ministry, after trying to get him expelled from Hogwarts, have placed their own teacher at the school and keep passing legislation to control it and force Dumbledore out.

a brief summary of the book

Harry Potter: the half-blood prince / Brennan

Filed under: Uncategorized —— Brennan @ 7:29 pm

A great book. A lot better than the movie. The Half Blood Prince begins slightly differently than others in the series. In the the beginning, an unsuspecting muggle Prime Minister is visited by Cornelius Fudge and is told that Lord Voldemort has returned and several muggle atrocities including a bridge collapse, a hurricane, and a few murders are in fact the work of Voldemort. To that The Prime Minister says “But for heaven’s sake-you’re wizards! You can do magic! Surely you can sort out–er–anything! The Minister of Magic replies, “The trouble is, the other side can do magic too.”

Thats just the beginning. the rest gets more exciting and adventurous. I hope that book sounds good!

Brian’s Return

As millions of readers of Hatchet, The River, and Brian’s Winter know, Brian Robeson survived alone in the wilderness by finding solutions to extraordinary challenges. But now that he’s back in civilization, Brian can’t find a way to make sense of ordinary daily life. He feels disconnected, more isolated than he did alone in the North. The only answer is to return to the woods, to “go back in,” for only in the wilderness can Brian discover his true path in life, and where he really belongs.

Harold Schernoff, 14-year-old science whiz and social nerd, has a theory for every problem, from dating, to bullies, to making money, to sports, to how to buy a car when you’re underage. When he and his buddy team up to put his theories to the test, nothing goes according to plan. A ski lesson becomes: Mass x Acceleration x Slope of hill = eeeAAGGHHH. As for first dates, only Harold could mastermind such disaster. Only Harold could go fishing and get caught by the fish. And only Gary Paulsen could write such a wonderfully funny story of friendship.
